E Plug delivers newly developed 9 5/8 multi-set TorcPlug for P&A campaign.

Challenge

A major operator in Malaysia challenged E Plug to increase efficiency in their Plug & Abandonment operations by transitioning 9 5/8” plug operations from drill pipe to wireline. Conducted from a Hydraulic Workover unit with limited tripping speed, the move to wireline allowed the customer to save 2-3 days per well.

Solution

The solution was to develop the world’s first 9 5/8” multi-set and multi-latch wireline plug, designed to be set in corroded 9 5/8” 40# casing and adaptable to 47# and 53.5# casing weights. This innovative product was developed from concept to field-proven in less than six months, showcasing our rapid engineering and deployment capabilities.

The new TorcPlug features real-time setting verification via TorcDrive Software, ensuring precise and adaptable setting force. This flexibility allows the plug to be repositioned if pressure tests fail, significantly reducing operational risk.

The field trial was successfully executed during an offshore P&A campaign in Malaysia. Initially, the plug was set at 2370mMD to confirm a suspected casing leak, which was identified as planned. Subsequently, the 9 5/8” TorcPlug was set at 1450mMD as a barrier for nippling up the Blowout Preventer. The plug was set, and pressure tested according to the well program, proving its effectiveness and reliability.

Value Created

The field trial was successfully executed, setting a new benchmark for 9 5/8” multiset wireline plugs in the industry. This operation demonstrated the ability to set and reposition the plug with the same running tool in a single run. Identifying a casing leak and setting the plug as a barrier in the same run saved the customer over three days of rig time compared to using drill pipe. This not only showcases the efficiency and effectiveness of the TorcPlug but also provides a robust blueprint for future operations.
